Meeting the urgent climate challenge requires “transformation” of social and ecological systems to provide protection, nurture a thriving and inclusive economy, and deliver essential ecosystem services to support communities now and into the future. Building political and economic power within communities are foundational practices for climate resilience. This session provides examples and engages in activities that demonstrate how to position the climate challenge as an opportunity for social and economic change. We will share foundational practices of equity-centric design thinking, tools to help practitioners co-create, and strategies to transform and re-imagine with under-invested communities that support beneficial outcomes for all.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Identify key components of community resilience, through exploration of inspiring case study projects.
  • Learn how to engage communities in an empowering process of co-creation, as a tool to promote systemic change.
  • Understand the historical context of structural injustice in communities, and the way it magnifies vulnerability.
  • Gain an understanding of the many ways that greater social equity supports community resilience goals for everyone
